Cycling Policy & Information

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of Parking Services to provide our University Community and visitors with safe and well maintained parking and transiting infrastructure. We are dedicated to courteous and helpful customer service through information resources, polite and knowledgeable staff, and convenient, accessible parking facilities. We encourage voluntary compliance, and environment preservation through alternative means of transportation.

  1. All traffic regulations stated herein shall apply to bicycles and operators of such. Bicycles shall not be operated on sidewalks, lawn areas, or other areas not accessible by motor vehicles. Bicycles shall not be operated in any internal building area and can’t be stored, except in ones room or approved storage area. Parking Service rents bicycle parking space in, Cycle Safe bicycle lockers, as well as, in McMaster’s Secure Bike Storage Facility. Bicycles must be parked in bicycle racks, secure bike storage, bike lockers or other authorized bicycle storage areas to promote maximum safety and security, while minimizing environmental damage. Bicycles are not to be locked to or leaned against handrails, trees, shrubs, bushes or other features of the University. Bicycles found in violation are subject to ticketing, double locking, or removal by Security Services.
  2. Stunt (trick) riding is prohibited on University Property.

The University encourages sustainable modes of transportation and recognizes the need to balance the demands of pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and vehicles.

Full-time undergraduate students benefit from a U-pass program, where they have unlimited access to the City of Hamilton transit by simply showing their student card to transit bus operators. GO Transit provides frequent and direct services to campus from the Lakeshore corridor and the Highway 407 corridor. The University maintains numerous public and secure bicycle parking facilities for cyclists, and SWHAT (Student Walk Home Attendant Team) is a student program offering escorted walks home from campus. The University also subscribes to a web based ride matching program to assist people to find carpool partners to share the costs of driving and reduce the demand for parking at McMaster.

  1. In-line skating, skateboarding will be restricted to roadways only, and shall not be performed on side walks, lawns or other areas not accessible by motor vehicles.
  2. In-line skating, skateboarding within any building of McMaster University is strictly prohibited. All in-line skates and skateboards shall be removed at the entrance to any building. In-line skating and skateboarding shall not be carried out on ramps specifically provided for mobility of persons with disabilities.
  3. In-line skating, skateboarding is strictly prohibited on any prepared sport surface such as, but not limited to, the tennis courts, track areas, or sports fields.
  4. It shall be noted by the in-line skater, skateboarder that the roads are not designed, built, or maintained to meet the requirements of in-line skating or skateboarding, and hence are used at their own risk.
  5. McMaster University does not accept responsibility for accidents or other consequences arising from in-line skating or skateboarding.

Failure to comply with the McMaster University Traffic and Parking Regulations can result in fines and/or tow away and storage of the vehicle at the owner’s risk and expense and/or cancellation of parking privileges. Offences are enforced by Parking Control Officers and Special Constables. Violations, fines and penalties can apply to the driver or owner of the vehicle on McMaster property. Where the identity of the driver of a vehicle is unknown, notices of fines, citations or penalties notices will be sent to the registered owner.

Bicycles are recognized as vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act. All traffic regulations that apply to motorists apply to cyclists. For more information regarding traffic laws and regulations on campus, please visit the parking information & policies page.

Bicycle Fines on Campus

Contravention of rules of the road – $25.00

Failing to obey regulatory sign – $25.00

Fail to yield right of way to pedestrians – $30.00

Locking bicycle to location other than bike rack – $25.00

Operating bicycle on sidewalk – $25.00

Speeding – $25.00

Ticket payments can be made online using our McMaster Parking Online Sales.

Alternatively, you can choose to mail your payment please send a cheque made payable to Mcmaster University and reference the ticket/transaction number.
